![]() Fifty years after Auburn's first Southeastern Conference Baseball Championship, the 1958 Auburn team will take the field once again at Plainsman Park. The 1958 team will be honored and introduced in pre-game ceremonies on Saturday, April 12 prior to Auburn's game against South Carolina. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m. In 1958, the Tigers beat Alabama in two games at Rickwood Field in Birmingham to win the best-of-three championship playoff. In one game, "Red" Roberts made history by pitching a 13-inning complete game in a 3-2 Auburn victory. Auburn clinched the championship in game two with a 5-4 victory over the Crimson Tide. In the early days of the SEC, the baseball championship was decided by the winners of the Eastern Division meeting the winners of the Western Division. Auburn had won the East and Alabama had won the West in 1958. In 1958, two-sport student-athletes were common and the Auburn baseball team was a good example. Baseball team members Jackie Burkett, Tommy Lorino, Lloyd Nix and Morris Savage were also football players on the 1957 National Football Championship team. Rex Frederick was an All-SEC basketball player. The 1958 team also featured another first in Auburn baseball. Pat Duke, the catcher and a leader on the team, was Auburn's first All-American. Coach Joe Connally, who called Duke "a coach on the field", also stands alone in Auburn history. Connally served as baseball coach only one year, 1958, and won an SEC Championship. Saturday's game will also feature a ceremonial first pitch by "Red" Roberts to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the 1958 SEC Baseball Championship. Tickets for each game of the Auburn-South Carolina series (Friday at 6:00 p.m., Saturday at 3:00 p.m. and Sunday at 2:00 p.m.) are available and may be ordered by calling 1-800-AUB-1957, ext. 1 or on-line auburntigers.com. ©2010 DFW Auburn Club All Rights Reserved
