AUBURN - Senior Cory Martin has been named Southeastern Conference Men's Field Athlete of the Year for the outdoor season for the second straight year, the conference office announced Monday. Martin won the award for both the indoor and outdoor seasons in 2007.

Martin won the Commissioner's Trophy as the high men's point scorer at the SEC Outdoor Championships May 15-18, scoring 28 points by winning titles in the shot put and hammer throw while placing second in the discus. It marked the second straight year he scored 28 points at the SEC outdoor meet.

Martin, who has now won seven SEC titles and six All-American awards during his career, is currently ranked No. 1 in the NCAA in the hammer throw and No. 3 in the shot put. He broke the school record in the hammer throw earlier this year with a mark of 73.07 (239-9), and his personal-best mark of 20.31m (66-7.75) in the shot put ranks second best in school history. Martin is undefeated this season in the hammer throw, and tied the Drake Relays record while winning that event last month.

It marked the third time in the last four seasons that an Auburn student-athlete won the Men's Field Athlete of the Year award for the outdoor season, with Edis Elkasevic earning the honor in 2005 prior to Martin winning it the last two years. Former Tiger thrower Gabor Mate was also named SEC Athlete of the Year in 2000 prior to the awards for field events and running events being split.

Auburn will compete at the NCAA Mideast Regional Championships May 30-31 in Fayetteville, Ark.
